Issue 48 – Animal Health Camp

In the area of work of Badwah Mahila Pragati Samiti, the team of 'Pashudhan Karyakram' is organizing animal health camps. About 100 animals gather in one camp, in which both big and small animals are treated and vaccinated free of cost. In the camp, discussions are also held on animal care and diet, and the importance of weight and growth of goats (small animals) is also explained. All medicines required for the animals are also provided free of cost.

The arrangement of the camp and informing the people of the village where the camp is to be held is the responsibility of the 'Para Veterinary Program' team. This team is from the local area, and its workers are trained in veterinary science. Their main responsibility is to take care of the health of the animals of the village people. The 'Para Veterinary' team goes on motorcycles to inform people about the health camp, and where the roads are bad, they go on foot to give information so that as many animals as possible can be treated in the camp.

Because the camps are held only once a year in each place, the villagers do not take their cattle out to the forest to graze on that date, thus ensuring that each animal can be vaccinated and treated. In the first two months of this year, animal health camps had been held in 12 villages, with some 2080 animals benefiting from free treatment and vaccines. The ‘Livestock Programme’ aims to complete around 25 such health camps in Barwaha’s villages by May end.

The Animal Health Camps have two main objectives in providing free vaccines and veterinary treatment: care for their cattle should be within easy reach for the villagers; the animals owned by villagers should stay safe and healthy. Making quality care for livestock locally available will help in animal disease prevention and in reducing mortality rates.
