Issue 5 – Tribal Community Forest Rights with Gram Sabha in Chethar village

Samaj Pragati Sahyog Sanstha has been working with the Gram Sabha in Chethar village on Janjati Community Forest Rights for the past two years. Collective Forest Rights recognise the rights of forest-dwelling communities to collect and use non-timber forest produce, including tendu leaves. Two years ago, the Tendu Leaf Collection Maharashtra Forest Produce Transit Rules 1969, regulated the transit and trade of forest produce. These rules laid down the procedure for licenses, transportation and sale, but in the absence of the consent of the Gram Sabha, money and bonuses were not paid on time. After Samaj Pragati Sahyog Sanstha and the people of Chethar Gram Sabha raised the issue in the Amravati Gram Sabha, permission was granted to collect tendu leaves.

In the year 2022, the Gram Sabha collected tendu leaves worth Rs 11 lakh and in 2023, due to bad weather, it collected leaves worth Rs 7.1 lakh. After this, people understood the importance and rights of the Gram Sabha. With the efforts of Gram Sabha Chethar and Samaj Pragati Sahayog Sanstha, the people of the village started getting money on time for tendu leaf collection, and people are understanding community forest rights promotion and management.
